A wealthy, powerful sweatshop owner falls in love with employee’s teenage daughter, who feels obligated to marry him after he shares his wealth with her parents, though she actually loves a young Marxist unionizer.

Our Children (Poland, 1948)
September 26 | 6:30 p.m.
This semi-documentary film (and Poland’s last Yiddish feature) features the comedy duo Shimon Dzigan and Israel Shumacher who had recently returned from the Soviet Union, and Jewish children who had survived the Holocaust. Reversals continue during the performers’ visit to the children’s residence, as the children teach adults about the healing possibilities of music, dance, and storytelling.

Commissar (Soviet Union, 1967)

Klavdia Vavilova, a Red Army cavalry commissar, is waylaid by an unexpected pregnancy. She stays with a Jewish family to give birth and is softened somewhat by the experience of family life.

Blazing Saddles (USA, 1974)

In this satirical take on Westerns, crafty railroad worker Bart becomes the first black sheriff of Rock Ridge, a frontier town about to be destroyed in order to make way for a new railroad. Initially, the people of Rock Ridge harbor a racial bias toward their new leader. However, they warm to him after realizing that Bart and his perpetually drunk gunfighter friend are the only defense against a wave of thugs sent to rid the town of its population.

The Plot Against Harry (USA, 1969)

Jewish mobster Harry Plotnick is finally released from prison after two decades. Returning to a very different world, Harry tries to ease back into his criminal ways on his old turf, but it soon becomes clear that he’s thoroughly out-dated. When he encounters his ex-wife and his now-adult daughters, whom he doesn’t even know, he decides to clean up his act.

Women’s Balcony (Israel, 2016)

This film follows a Mizrahi synagogue congregation in Jerusalem’s Bukharan Quarter. The congregation is in disarray from building damage to their synagogue. A charismatic and handsome young rabbi promises to rebuild the synagogue, but seeks to move the community in a far more conservative direction.
