Dear Friends of Jazz,
A whole year has sped by since we last connected with you! We hope you are well.
As a community, we have weathered so much uncertainty and loss since the spring of 2020. We all know folks who’ve struggled with the illness—perhaps you’ve had it yourself. We have had less time with our family and friends, our routines have been disrupted, and we’ve missed special gatherings like concerts. If the pandemic has taught us one thing, surely it’s how essential arts and culture are to our well-being.
After a brief pandemic-induced hiatus, The Asper Foundation and the Rady JCC, along with Series Producer Charlene Diehl, are truly excited to announce that a new season of the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances is bringing world-class live jazz to our beloved Berney Theatre here in Winnipeg.
We proudly present four weekends of concerts, beginning on October 1-2 with the Oran Etkin Trio. This dynamic young clarinetist fuses an appreciation for diverse musical cultures with a deep love of the jazz tradition. Our second concert, November 26-27, features the legendary singer Mary Stallings. A natural storyteller with a rich voice, Stallings is our opportunity to be in the presence of jazz royalty. On March 25-26, we welcome the Joe Locke Quartet, a group we had planned to host in May 2020. Locke, one of the world’s esteemed jazz vibraphonists, is joined by singer Kenny Washington, an audience favourite. Our season closes April 15-16 with the Bruce Barth Trio. The New York Village Voice calls Barth “one of the best pianists in town, period.” Concerts will take place on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons; we are foregoing the Sunday evening concert this season.
A more detailed description of the season can be found in the 2022-2023 Izzy Asper Jazz Performances Brochure.
We invite you to purchase a subscription to all four concerts (quartet), or to three (trio) if you prefer. A subscription gives you reserved seating at a reduced price; it also allows you to provide valuable support as we re-enter the live performance zone. Another way to enjoy and show your support this season is to become a Supporter, Patron, or Benefactor. As always, non-subscribers may purchase single tickets in advance or at the door.
When jazz aficionado Israel Asper dreamed up the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances 23 years ago, he wanted Winnipeggers to experience the best and brightest jazz artists right here at home. Many of you have been our loyal supporters since the beginning, others have joined us along the way.
We look forward to welcoming some new audience members this season as well. It will be wonderful to see you all, and to keep Izzy’s dream alive!
Together in music—
