Culture & Community » The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School

  • Join the Great Jewish Conversation

If you want to experience an interactive approach to adult Jewish education where you can wrestle with the ideas that underlie Jewish life and gain meaning from Jewish texts and connect that learning to every life, then the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School is for you.

The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, a project of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem offers adults the opportunity to acquire Jewish literacy in an open, pluralistic and intellectually stimulating learning environment that grounds adults in Jewish knowledge and values. The Melton Mini-School is designed for all levels of Jewish commitment, affiliation and experience in a non-judgmental framework and is planned to challenge and empower adult learners in a thought-provoking and inspiring course of study.

The Melton Mini-School was launched in Winnipeg in November 2004 by the Rady Jewish Community Centre. Since the inception of the program, over 140 students from all backgrounds, experiences and affiliations have been enrolled in the program and the third graduating class completed its studies this past June.

Many adults feel positive about their Jewish roots, but are handicapped by limited knowledge about Jewish tradition and practices. They want the competence to do Jewish things with their families and friends and to get involved in making a difference in their communities.

    An Innovative Program
  • The two year Melton program consists of 30 classes each year for two years held weekly for two hours.
  • Each 30 week session consists of two one-hour classes with a break for refreshments and informal discussion
  • There are no exams, grades, prerequisites or homework.
  • Students register for one year at time. Upon completion of the two years of study, students receive a Certificate of Jewish Study from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
  • Students are inspired to become independent Jewish learners, exploring and experiencing their own Judaism, challenging and constantly defining what Judaism means to them.
  • Mini-School students receive a well-rounded introduction to the essentials of Judaism and leave Jewishly knowledgeable, empowered and wanting to learn more.
  • The Mini-School offers a challenging but accessible course of Jewish study taught with a pluralistic approach that draws upon the best scholarship from all movements of Judaism.
  • Learners are introduced to a broad spectrum of Jewish knowledge through an integrated course of study in an atmosphere of warmth, respect and understanding.
  • Become Part of A Unique Group
  • Classes are for adults interested in serious study who desire to achieve a strong foundation in Jewish literacy
  • The courses are appropriate for all levels of Jewish knowledge and commitment
  • There is direct contact with primary sources, critical and reflective analysis and group interaction with experience, highly-qualified educators
  • Knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary. All texts are offered in English translation.
  • The Melton Curriculum
  • The curriculum is composed of four sequential text-based courses that encompass a comprehensive range of topics-Jewish practices, holidays, history, ethics, ideas and values with an emphasis on the diversity of traditional and contemporary texts.
  • First Year Courses
  • Rhythms of Jewish Living-The analysis of ideas, beliefs and practices that shape a Jewish life, as well as an exploration of observances that are connected to the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly cycles, along with life cycle events. The "why" as well as the "what" of Jewish traditional life patterns.
  • Purposes of Jewish Living-The study of the ultimate purposes of Judaism and the development of the covenant with God. Discussion of essential Jewish theological concepts and ideas as they unfold in the Bible, Talmud and other sacred texts.
  • Second Year Courses
  • Dramas of Jewish Living-Key events are identified and discussed for their meaning in the context of Jewish history, and for the insight they provide into today's world. The study of historical texts from the Biblical period to the present explores and informs our understanding of the dramatic events, developments and issues that have confronted the Jewish people.
  • Ethics of Jewish Living-A text-centered approach to the study of the ethical issues which emerge in our relationships, such as family, justice, death, sexuality and community with case studies from Biblical, Talmudic rabbinic and contemporary literature.

  • Melton Scholars Curriculum: For Melton Mini-School Graduates

The Scholars Curriculum provides an opportunity for continued study for graduates of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School. Building on the two years of text-based study of Judaism, the Scholars Curriculum focuses on a deeper examination of selected Jewish texts, from the Biblical to the modern. The Scholars Curriculum invites Mini-School graduates to the engagement with Jewish texts that has shaped Jews and Judaism for millennia.

Shivim Panim: 70 Faces of Wisdom

This series of study focuses on seventy lessons making up seven modules of graduate study based on selections of texts from the Torah. Based on the tradition that the Torah has "70 faces" or ways of interpreting and understanding it, the curriculum features a multi-faceted approach to its study. These include:
  • Modern and classic commentary by scholars
  • Interpretations of the texts by artists, poets, and others in a variety of media
  • Opportunities to learn key Hebrew vocabulary in the context of text study
  • Discussions on the real-life implications of the texts

Bereshit 1-From Adam to Abraham: The First 20 Generation

Bereshit I is the first unit in the Shiv'im Panim series, focusing on the first 20 generations of the Biblical narrative, from Adam to Abraham. The stories include "The Creation of Woman" and "The First Murder," and proceed through the universal tales of the flood and the Tower of Bavel to address the foundational texts of the Jewish people in the stories of Abraham and Sarah, and "The Expulsion of Ishmael" and "Akeidat Yitzhak." The themes of family and faith, honor and dishonor, passion and power provide a rich
exploration of our people and ourselves.

Israeli Literature As a Window to Israeli Society
This literary journey offers a fresh and fascinating examination of Israeli society since the birth of the State in 1948. Through the pens of Israel's leading writers, participants have an encounter with Israeli society that is original, contemporary, honest, and proud. Reflections of the mythic Israel are matched by poetry and
prose that is challenging and self-critical, and both offer profound insight into the Israeli national psyche.
