VISITING DANCE GROUP FROM MEXICO SET TO PERFORM AT SHALOM SQUARE
Winnipeg, MB - For years after its founding, Shalom Square – the Israel Pavilion – is now an eagerly anticipated annual staple of Folklorama. From August 8 to 12, pavilion guests can take a whirlwind tour of exciting, exceptionally diverse dance from Israel, with internationally renowned and Winnipeg’s own Chai Folk Ensemble and Anajnu Veatem, Mexico City’s premier Israeli dance troupe. Together, they bring to life the best of Israeli folklore and culture through music, song and dance.
“Each year during Folklorama, we try to keep our audiences intrigued with the selection of songs and dances reflecting the cultural richness of Israel,” shares Gayle Waxman, Rady JCC executive director. “The Rady JCC is honoured to have the privilege of hosting the Shalom Square Israeli Pavilion once again. The Israeli pavilion continues to welcome guests from all over the world. The pavilion itself fosters the spirit of community and inclusiveness – values that are also very important to the Rady. We are especially thrilled as we have two world class Israeli folk groups performing for the first time on the Shalom Square stage.”
During the first time that the Chai Folk Ensemble and Anajnu Veatem met at the 2011 Festival Aviv – it was clear that the two dance companies made an extraordinary connection. The Israeli pavilion presented a great opportunity for collaboration – twenty dancers are traveling from Mexico City to perform with Chai and to showcase their creative repertoire. Anajnu Veatem — which means “Us and You” in Hebrew began 41 years ago in Mexico. They are a traditional Jewish dance group, but they also represent the cultural diversity of Mexico. Anajnu has toured the United States, throughout Mexico and attended many international Festivals.
Along with delicious hummus, falafel, tasty dessert and the cold cool taste of Maccabee Israeli beer, guests will be able to savour the breathtaking breadth of cultural displays and musical performances showcasing the best of Israel - proving that Shalom Square is a pavilion you won’t want to miss at this year’s Folklorama.
