Daniel Kahn @ The Painted Bird: “Freedom Is A Verb” Tour
SUNDAY, JUNE 17, 7:00 P.M.
The Painted Bird returns to the road as the original Yiddish borderland bandits with their new album: The Butcher’s Share. The Berlin-based and Detroit-born multi-talented musician and multi-instrumentalist (accordion, piano and guitars), Daniel Kahn, will perform with his band including Berlin’s clarinet/sax/brass Master, Christian Dawid, American old-time fiddle virtuoso, Jake Shulman-Ment, experimental contrabassist composer, Michael Tuttle, and neo-klezmist drummer, Hampus Melin.
The Butcher’s Share, presented at Mameloshen 2018, is the most powerful and complex work of the band so far and is dedicated to the great political and personal themes of our time. This collection of originals, translations and adaptations smuggles songs over the borders between languages, histories, cultures, and genres from Klezmer,Jazz, Brecht, Waits and Folk Ballads.
Joanne Borts Celebrates Mameloshen!
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20, 7:30 P.M.
This Yiddish Diva herself, Joanne Borts, will be celebrating the 10th Mameloshen Anniversary with a magnificent show.
Joanne Borts is one of New York’s favourite theatre and cabaret artists with a catalogue that embraces American Standards and the rich traditions of the Yiddish Theatre.
Inspired by Fanny Brice, Molly Picon and Bette Midler, this multi-talented Broadway dynamo delivers a sexy, energetic and humour-filled evening of song and dance that bridges the gap between American musical theatre and her Yiddish roots.
She’s performed with Neil Sedaka, Theodore Bikel, The Klezmatics, the Klezmer Conservatory Band and Frank London’s Klezmer Brass All-Stars at such prestigious venues as Lincoln Center, the 92nd Street Y, Joe’s Pub and Carnegie Hall.
To start the evening, Gray Academy Students will entertain with their renditions of Yiddish favourites.

Casey Chisick and Tracy Kasner Greaves in Concert
SUNDAY JUNE 24, 2:00 P.M. & 7:30 P.M.
Casey Chisick and Tracy Kasner Greaves have been fixtures of Winnipeg’s Jewish music scene for more than 30 years. They share a musical friendship that was first established on stage at Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate, continued for more than a decade in the Chai Folk Ensemble, and endures to this day. But their partnership has been mostly a long-distance affair since 2002, when Casey moved to Toronto and Tracy took up her current position as cantor at Congregation Etz Chayim.
Now, Mameloshen is proud to reunite this duo in a brand-new musical celebration, paying tribute to the golden age of Yiddish theatre. For this special performance, Tracy and Casey will be supported by their good friends Myron Schultz (clarinet), Victor Schultz (violin), Rick Boughton (trumpet), Jeffrey Dolovich (piano), and Kinzey Posen (bass), with new musical arrangements by Sid Robinovitch and special guests to be announced. It’s a reunion that’s long overdue – and not to be missed!
Performances take place at the Berney Theatre.
